Writer’s space & time

Messy desk

No writer ever has enough space or time to write. That is one of our challenges. Unless you’re very wealthy (which most of us are not) we have a little place carved out of our homes to write. I think it was Stephen King who used to write in the utility room, but I could be mistaken. And if he did, it was VERY long ago. I had a great writing space until I started telecomuting in my day job. Now my special place is split between ALU office, home finances & correspondence, and creative writing. Notice it’s relagated to last. … Continue reading

“Word of Mouth on Steroids”

don't be afraid of change

I’m a member of the local, state and national Professional Communicators organization. During the monthly luncheon meeting this week we had an interesting guest from the university who talked about how our lives as communicators have changed and continues to do so. Communication is not just social; it’s mobile, visual and global now. But it’s not just about the technology. Regardless of the form, the strength of good communication is the ability to tell a story. Communicators must adapt to the decline of traditional business models. The power of communication is shifting to individuals – he called it “word-of-mouth on steroids”. … Continue reading

March right on in!

Hi everybody. I can hardly believe it is the third month of 2012 ALREADY. We sort of skipped winter in the Midwest and now spring storms are kicking up a fuss all over. Do you suppose Mother Nature is a little grumpy? We all have our good days and bad. We all get grouchy sometimes. I have a 16 year old German Shorthair that is a grouch every day. She has lost some of her sight, some of her hearing, she’s arthritic, but she eats well and loves to lay in the sun. She’ll start on one side and when … Continue reading

Leap year? Roughly Right? Leap of Faith?

ancient writing

It’s been a while since I was in school and studied leap year so I looked it up. When in doubt…? The bottom line is this: it’s a math problem. According to “The Straight Dope” “…the astronomical year – the time it takes the earth to go exactly once around the sun – is not precisely 365 days. The ancients estimated it as 365.25 days…it’s actually 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds.” Nothing is ever easy, is it? To keep the astronomical year and calendar year ALMOST in synch “Leap Year” was adopted. Proposed in 709, they’ve … Continue reading

emotion, Emotion, EMOTION!

boots stomping a cowboy hat

Readers want to feel the character’s emotions in a story. They want to see it in their minds’ eye. They want to experience the cold chill of fear, warm contentment from a soft kiss, the joy of a child’s enthusiasic hug. Don’t just show them – pull them into the story. There’ve been some films about readers who have been literally pulled into a book – The Never Ending Story and Harry Potter quickly come to mind. That’s really what writing is all about. And reading, too. When was the last time you cried while reading a book? I vividly … Continue reading

What do Hostess cupcakes & novels have in common?

chocolate heart surprise

Hopefully, the answer is a very yummy middle. On the verge of sleep last night this silly question popped into my head. I remember my first Hostess cupcake, you know the chocolate one with the squiggle on top. Very sweet and love the sweet surprise in the middle. When it’s all gone you feel satisfied and sad it’s all gone. Don’t you feel the same way about a good book? The outside looks appealing. Smells good. The first bite (chapter) is good. And the more you read the better it gets. And when it’s done, you feel satisfied and sad … Continue reading
