what it is and what it isn’t
As writers we try to “set the scene” for our stories so the reader can feel as though they are there. The passing of the seasons is a great way for time to depicted. “Feisty Family Values” starts in the autumn when the leaves are turning red and gold, and beginning their decent before winter. It’s a time of great beauty but also a time to prepare for the “dead” of winter. Personally, I love autumn and spring best. They are such transitional seasons filled with change and color. “Feisty” ended in spring when everything was beginning to bloom and … Continue reading
“When you come to a roadblock, take a detour.” ~Barbara Bush I’ve been on some interesting detours. On a driving vacation in the Rockies we took an “unimproved” road and found ourselves on a one lane track hugging the side of a mountain. It was beautiful and terrifying. The road was wide enough for one vehicle and littered with rocks. We were driving a Fiat 124 Coupe with low ground clearance. Occasionally we found a little wide part of the road, luckily, so the 4-wheel drive vehicles could pass. You never see what’s down the side of a mountain when … Continue reading
I know Valentine’s Day is over, but I have to say “I love my readers.” They ROCK! Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of visiting a local book club called the “Bookies.” What a delightful group. They were so curious about all aspects from idea to manuscript to the shelves. We talked for a very long time and I think I succeeded in answering all of their questions. There have been some books that didn’t grab me around the throat like it did my friend, but it was generally still a very good book. I’ve been reading about what makes a best seller. Word of mouth. Enthusiasm from book sellers, librarians, authors and readers. In other words, a big buzz. Right now the buzz is all about “Hunger Games.” I read an article about it and how the manuscript made the rounds around the publishing house. Everyone was talking about it and passing … Continue reading

I know, I’m a day late, but there’s really good reason! I was at the KWA Scene conference all day yesterday (8AM-9PM). It was Great! There were agents, editors, publishers, authors, experts – You Name It! Good stuff for writers. AND for the reader, too. I know I’m trying to cut back on my “book habit” but I can’t – I bought 3 wonderful books that I can’t wait to read. Dark Eye, by William Bernhardt The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, by “The Book Doctors” D. Sterry & A. Eckstut Dating Da Vinci, by Malena Lott You … Continue reading
