Patience, Perseverance and Pluck
The 3P’s are vital to a writer’s success. They actually apply in any pursuit. Patience is to endure and to be steadfast. (This P is the First requirement of any goal, ESPECIALLY writing for publication. Keep trying. There’s a lot of rejection in this business and it is tough to take. But if you want to succeed, keep on writing, submitting and learning. Stay on the path to your goal.) Perseverance is to persist. Rejection is part of the process.
About a dozen years ago I made a decision to pursue a writing career. My goals the first couple of years was to perfect my craft and submit something every month to contests, journals, whatever. Not surprising, my rejection folder grew a lot faster than my acceptance folder. As time went on, however, the published or award winning folder surpassed it in size. I highly recommend contests, especially ones that provide critiques. Keep in mind that not all critiques are created equal. One of those weeks…everyone has them.
One of our KWA writing buddies wrote a blog this week on how much “rejection sucks.” (It really does.) My work email has been broken for three days & I’m a corporate communicator – kinda hard when you can’t email. (Not life threatening, but frustrating none the less.) One of my friend’s children is already struggling with school and it’s only the second week. (I remember those days and they were HARD.) My east coast buddies are trying to batten down the hatches and ride out Hurricane Irene. (We mere mortals don’t have much affect on Mother Nature.) Etc. Etc. … Continue reading
