Why I write…
I posted this on Facebook, but I thought I should share it here, too. Several people have asked me if I’m writing to get rich. The fact is that only a dozen or so authors have gotten “rich” on their writing. That’s not why I write. I am fascinated with people, their families, their friends, and their stories. I’ve written non-fiction articles about some amazing people doing extraordinary things in their ordinary lives. The neighbor who has worked with the Children’s Home for the majority of her 80 years. The woman’s group that creates quilts and afghans for children in … Continue reading
Little things mean a lot.
Every year I start my Christmas shopping in the summer time, picking up stocking stuffers and “little things” that I think someone might enjoy. They are usually on sale, which is a bonus for me, because I get more for my money. I’m not alone in this practice, either, what with the economy and unemployment many people have started early and taken advantage of sale pricing to get fun things for their loved ones. One of my favorite stores is a little boutique down in Old Town Wichita that has really interesting and unusual “little things”. Every year I find … Continue reading
Families come in all sizes…
Family is a very important part of living a full and enjoyable life. We aren’t always born in large families, so often times we “adopt” friends who become like family. You just never know who will come into your life or how long they will stay. I spent the weekend with my Aunt Eileen and had a blast just hanging out, looking at photo albums, recalling fond memories and those we’ve loved and lost. It was a blast. I’m afraid I allowed a lot of time to pass between visits, while I was busy with my immediate family and work. … Continue reading
TGIF & CONTEST TIME!
Anyone interested in a FEISTY FAMILY VALUES tee shirt? It’s black, v-neck women’s XL, with the cover on the front (the house). It’s not that long until Christmas so if it’s not something you would wear think about the ladies in the house. Wouldn’t it make a great companion gift with a copy of the book? All you have to do is comment on my blog, or Like BD Tharp Books on Facebook, or follow bdtharp on Twitter and your name goes in the magic box. (Don’t worry, I get an email every time one of these thing happen, so … Continue reading
Balancing act!
Life is a balancing act. Especially in this day when everything is so tightly scheduled. We communicate in so many ways, but they are usually short messages letting our friends and family know we’re still here and thinking of them. I don’t remember the last time I wrote or received a really long letter. Now, it’s quicker and easier to dash off an email, get right to the point, and move on to the next project. Many of us fall into the over-achiever category. And once there we have to maintain it, right? We mark off all the things we’ve … Continue reading
…we start & end with the family…
Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family. ~Anthony Brandt
The proof is in the pudding? Nope. It’s in the editing.
For a writer, the proof is in the editing. Once we put the story to paper (or electronic form) then it’s time to go back and make it even better. The first step is “get the story down” and then edit when you’re done. When I wrote my first novel “Feisty Family Values” I wrote chapters and rewrote chapters and edited as I went along. Needless to say, I didn’t progress very quickly. I must have rewritten the first three chapters a dozen times at least. It took me months and I almost gave up. Then a wise writer told … Continue reading
One of those weeks…everyone has them.
One of our KWA writing buddies wrote a blog this week on how much “rejection sucks.” (It really does.) My work email has been broken for three days & I’m a corporate communicator – kinda hard when you can’t email. (Not life threatening, but frustrating none the less.) One of my friend’s children is already struggling with school and it’s only the second week. (I remember those days and they were HARD.) My east coast buddies are trying to batten down the hatches and ride out Hurricane Irene. (We mere mortals don’t have much affect on Mother Nature.) Etc. Etc. … Continue reading
Blog Block is now…Officially busted!
My writing buddy Carol had the following questions she wanted answered in my blog. Thanks for the input! Are you a character-driven or plot-driven writer? Where do you start when you begin a new project? I’m definitely a character-driven type of writer. Don’t get me wrong, plot is equally important – let’s just say – it’s a matter of balance and often one feeds the other. The idea that became Feisty Family Values happened during a very busy time in my life. I was working full time days and going to the university at night. My final year as I … Continue reading
