WSU journalism professor will be missed.
Les Anderson died this week and we will miss him. He was a teacher, mentor, journalist, author and all around nice guy. I met Les when I joined Wichita Professional Communicators several years ago. When he compiled his Ark Valley News humor columns into a book “Never Take a Snake for a Ride,” A lot of folks filled Watermark Books to hear him speak and have him sign copies. And I believe some or all of the proceeds went to the Valley Center Library building fund. He was a great guy and I’m glad to see a lot of people … Continue reading
Keyhole Conversations
Some author buddies of mine have developed a fun way to promote our books. They call it Keyhole Conversations. They interview a character from your book on video. It’s a lot of fun and gives the reader a little insight into the author through the character’s eyes. Here it is, an interview with Tillie, the feistiest woman in Feisty Family Values. I hope you enjoy it! (click on the blog title and it will take you to the page and video)
It’s Women’s Fiction Month…
Book Tours & More is featuring Feisty Family Values on the blog today. I hope you’ll stop by and comment. Thank you, Cheryl for your interest in FFV and women’s fiction. You Rock!
Life lessons learned from traveling…
I’m told there are four main life lessons that you learn from traveling: Planning Adaptability Communications Experience I’m thinking that these four items are good lessons for writers. But it can also apply to workers, mothers, politicians – you name it! So, what do we get when we PLAN? An outline, a direction for the story, deeper character development, more intricate plot and subplot. (I’m planning my new novel right now and it’s helping. I’m not sure an outline is in my future, but we’ll see.) We have to ADAPT as writers. Following where the story leads us and not … Continue reading
TGIF & CONTEST TIME!
Anyone interested in a FEISTY FAMILY VALUES tee shirt? It’s black, v-neck women’s XL, with the cover on the front (the house). It’s not that long until Christmas so if it’s not something you would wear think about the ladies in the house. Wouldn’t it make a great companion gift with a copy of the book? All you have to do is comment on my blog, or Like BD Tharp Books on Facebook, or follow bdtharp on Twitter and your name goes in the magic box. (Don’t worry, I get an email every time one of these thing happen, so … Continue reading
Author Expressions Blog
I’m blogging on Author Expressions today, so please stop by. I attended a great Writer’s Workshop on Saturday and wanted to share (Lisa Tucker and Watermark Books & Cafe ROCKS!)
Sometimes you just know.
Sometimes you just know what to do, and sometimes your just not sure. If you’re lucky, you make the right decision. If you find that is not the case, well, let’s just say that there are many paths we can take. If we head in the wrong direction, it’s time to turn around and go another way. The same holds true in writing. Authors don’t always know where the story is going, until it gets there. When it works we just know. But we’re a insecure bunch, it comes with being creative, and we need the input of others – … Continue reading
Balancing act!
Life is a balancing act. Especially in this day when everything is so tightly scheduled. We communicate in so many ways, but they are usually short messages letting our friends and family know we’re still here and thinking of them. I don’t remember the last time I wrote or received a really long letter. Now, it’s quicker and easier to dash off an email, get right to the point, and move on to the next project. Many of us fall into the over-achiever category. And once there we have to maintain it, right? We mark off all the things we’ve … Continue reading
Rejection is part of the process.
About a dozen years ago I made a decision to pursue a writing career. My goals the first couple of years was to perfect my craft and submit something every month to contests, journals, whatever. Not surprising, my rejection folder grew a lot faster than my acceptance folder. As time went on, however, the published or award winning folder surpassed it in size. I highly recommend contests, especially ones that provide critiques. Keep in mind that not all critiques are created equal. For example, one of the contests I submitted to gave me a critique from three judges. Two of … Continue reading
Roving Writers…aren’t we all?
An author buddy of mine mentioned that she had been several places in a single day while writing. I don’t remember the details, but I believe they included one place for coffee, one place for lunch, and a library or bookstore. I think it’s a great way to write. I get away from my little office at home whenever I can. Why is it a good thing, you ask? Because you get to experience different places with their own set of smells-sights-embience. You have an opportunity to see different people, hear snippets of their conversations, see what they are wearing-reading-buying. The … Continue reading
