Look for my byline in Womens Focus and Active Aging March 1st.

The March edition of Womens Focus will have 2 articles penned by B.D. Tharp. Tips on PACKING LIGHT, which I used during a recent business trip and can truthfully say work beautifully. Also, Mickey O’LYNCH’S ST. PAT’S BASH is coming up. The Lynches are Irish and really know how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a big way.

In Active Aging you’ll read about 2 SPECIAL OLYMPICS VOLUNTEERS who have made a huge difference to the community through a group called Wichita Independents. They’ve been involved over half their lives and even found each other at a Kansas Special Olympics sporting event.

Feisty Family Values and a traveling quilt square make it into print.

February is a good month for marketing and Womens Focus is helping me do just that. In the February edition, page 48, there’s an article about B.D. Tharp and Feisty Family Values. Pick one up at the local Wichita Dillons stores or visit womensfocus.com.

For the February edition of Active Aging I had the pleasure of telling a story about a traveling quilt square. The quilter made it in the 1930’s and it made it all across the country before coming back to the Troutman family. The Dresden Plate design is framed and hangs in her son’s house for all to see and admire.

Read about two incredible women who use their creative abilities to help others and make history come to life.

This was a busy month [January] for Active Aging articles. I had the pleasure of meeting and writing about two very interesting people. Marti McCartney and Virginia Stauffer.

Marti and her husband Michael are historical re-enactors. And Marti creates her own costumes from the undergarments up. Believe it or not, there are advantages to wearing a corset. She uses as many historic sewing techniques as possible and makes lovely garments.

Virginia Stauffer may be in a wheelchair, but she manages very nicely in her little apartment and makes the most glorious knitted sweaters for children all over the world. She participates in the “Sweater Project” and provides sweaters to orphans and handicapped children all over the world.

Ballet Wichita and Knitting for Kids

I had the pleasure of interviewing Barbara Chamberlain the Executive Director of Ballet Wichita for the December issue of Womens Focus magazine. What a delightful woman who has been a part of Wichita’s non-profit organizational growth over the years. An avid reader and animal lover, Barbara knows that special events don’t just make money for an organization, they also make friends.

You’ll read about Virginia Stauffer in Active Aging in December. This lovely lady makes beautifully knitted sweaters for children all over the world. After reading in the Guideposts about the “sweater project” she decided to add her contributions to help orphan and handicapped children. She may be wheelchair bound, but Virginia gets great pleasure out of being able to help others.

Active Aging and Social Networking and A Posse of Friends Help Fight and Beat Cancer

I wrote an article for the October Active Aging publication about Seniors and Social Networking. The statistics are surprising, the largest growth group for Facebook use is age 55-65. And currently the oldest blogger is 104 and living in Great Britain. Her predecessors were 109 and 108 but passed away in January and last summer respectively. I had the pleasure of interviewing several seniors who are active on Facebook, Twitter and avid bloggers. There’s a lot to be learned on the web, not the least of which is meeting new and interesting people.

In the October edition of Womens Focus I had the privelege of interviewing Besty Redler a 3-year cancer survivor who had a posse of friends that supported her during her battle. She and her posse are an inspiration. It’s the little things that matter, a card, a note, a flower, a meal – just letting someone who is ill know they are being thought of make all the difference. And when a mother finds herself scolding her child for leaving a mess, well, you know she’s getting better and that’s a good thing.

Look for both publications October 1st.

Look for my articles in the September issues of Womens Focus and Active Aging.

I have 3 articles in Womens Focus magazine in September: Free Spirit Jewelry, Glass Art & Vortex Marbles, and Sue Scott Smith and the Emma Chase Cafe. The artists that work in glass in Wichita are quite impressive, I only hope our photographs of the vortex marbles turn out – they are amazing. If you’re looking for some blue grass/country music on Friday night and don’t mind a scenic drive down Highway 177, visit Cottonwood Falls and the Emma Chase Cafe for fried catfish and a fun time.

In the September issue of Active Aging I had the pleasure of writing about an amazing program of service called Kansas to Kenya that’s sponsored by KSU and the Sedgwick County Extension Service.
