When I wrote Feisty Family Values I felt I’d written a story that every woman could relate to, regardless of their age. The sisterhood of women is held together by our shared experiences of family, friendships, relationships, and common understanding. No one knows better how a mother feels, than another mother. Women have empathy as well as sympathy for the issues we all face. If we haven’t personally experienced abuse, the death of a parent or child, life threatening illness, or a broken heart, then we know someone who has. We’ve held their hand and wiped their tears and cursed the fates right along beside them.
Helen Reddy said it perfectly in her song “I Am Woman”. Here are just a few of the words:
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
’cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
I love that song. It makes me feel empowered. It also reminds me I’m not alone. There are women out there who understand me, and I don’t even know them yet. When I sat down to write this blog I was bummed and worried about dumb stuff, like, what if no one comes to my next book signing? What if I don’t get that new job I applied for? What if? What if? What if? Now I’m hearing “I am woman” in my head. Thank you to all you wonderful women out there that I know and don’t know. Blessings to you on your journey and may you always feel like you can “do anything.”
