Lazy days of summer?

June 18th, 2010 |  Published in Blog  |  1 Comment

I remember a song from when I was little about the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.”  The crazy ones are definitely here.  With the heat zooming up toward 100, the hazy days are here.  But, I don’t see a lazy day anywhere in my near future.

When I do have a day off from work I fill the time with writing, promoting, editing and reading.  Even when we took a vacation a couple of years ago I kept a journal, so maybe it’s me.  Maybe I’ve forgotten how to sit still or stop to smell the flowers.

We all should take time to recharge our batteries, you know.  Does it ever make you feel guilty to just sit and read or watch a movie?  Sometimes I don’t enjoy it because I’m also trying to cook or do laundry at the same time. Did I ever tell you how often I burn dinner?  More often than I like to admit.

So maybe it’s time to focus.  To do one thing at a time, really well, and then move on to the next one.  It’s hard to do in the corporate world: you’re trying to write an email and the phone rings, you’re on a conference call and you get an instant message from your boss, your answering an email and ten more pop up before you’re done, and everything is due “right now.”

Part of it is our generation of instant and constant communication. Part of it is my personality, being busy is stimulating. But I’m thinking I need to slow down. Prioritize. And remember that it’s the journey that is important, not the destination.  Have a great summer everyone and make time for a few lazy days this summer!

Women tend to multi-task and over-extend themselves. We put everyone else’s needs before our own. I’m not saying we should be selfish, just more balanced. Thanks, Bonnie!
