I’m following AuthorAlchemy on Twitter and her message just now was: “Write from your heart. Your mind is just a vehicle.” Wow. That really spoke to me. It’s very important for writers to pack their prose with feeling, emotion and passion so the reader can experience it as well. I love to read a story that stimulates my heart as well as my mind. I want to care about the characters and the situation they are dealing with. A successful writer pulls that off with aplomb.
The mind of the writer sees a vision and brings it to the page. We hear the dialog, smell the aromas, feel the tension and hopefully make it come to life for the reader. The mind is there to remind us to focus on the task and follow the rules. Don’t let the inner critic part of the mind intrude too much, though. Stuff it into the drawer until you’ve gotten your first draft down on the page. Then edit and polish and make your prose a voluptuous addition to the skeleton of your story.
Don’t be afraid to cry or get mad or laugh at your story. As Robert Frost once said, “No tears in the writer. No tears in the reader.” Good luck on the writing journey my friends.
