Celebrate…

There are lots of small victories in the life of the writer.  Celebrate them.  When I started getting rejections with notations in ink versus a form letter I celebrated – they noticed something worth making a note about in my work.  Winning an “honorable mention” is a honorable prize indeed, you may not have been one of the top 3, but you were above the masses who submitted – celebrate.  When you do make it in the top 3 of a writing competition, frame that certificate, let everyone know, and do something to mark this milestone.

Although I wasn’t paid for my first published submission (an essay) it was a great feeling to be a part of a circle of women who contributed.  And when my first short story was published I bought a copy of the literary journal for everyone in my family.  When Womens Focus and then Active Aging hired me to write feature articles for them (for pay) I was thrilled.

It took a long time to finish Feisty Family Values and get it published.  When I received the contract from Five Star I cried happy tears. And when I received my Advanced Review Copies I danced around the room with the book in my hands. One of my best friends gave me flowers and another took me to lunch and we toasted with a glass of wine when Feisty Family Values came out.  I received cards and emails and sent a few myself so I could share the good news.  There’s a note on my tack board that reads: “I knew this day would come!!”

All along the journey there have been challenges and accomplishments and each are worthy of commiseration or celebration.  Enjoy the small victories, they add up over time and grow as you grow in the craft.  Share them with friends and family, it’s more fun that way!
