The Writer’s Life

Do you ever wonder what the writer’s life is like? I can tell you how this writer lives her life. I hit the snooze until I have just enough time to get a shower and a cup of tea before turning on my computer for my day job. Yes, I have an 8-5 day job, but I telecommute from home. I can’t access my personal email from my work laptop, it is forbidden, so I log onto my personal computer during lunch time. Every day I look for that special email from an agent that reads: “I love your work, I’d love to represent you.” Still waiting on that one. I look for emails from readers that read: “I love your work, when is the next book coming out.” Unfortunately, you can read books a lot faster than I can write them or get them published. I spend some time sending out notices on Twitter and Facebook about upcoming appearances or milestones with my writing, or just what page I’m up to in editing – page 209 of my new novel, Patchwork Family.
I grab a sandwich or can of soup, read a little if there is time, then go back to work. At 5:00 I log off of my day-job computer and check my email, Twitter, and Facebook again. I blog Monday, Wednesday and Friday and make calls for article interviews or appointments, and do research for Active Aging and Womens Focus articles. Fixing dinner is next, eating and cleaning up with NCIS in the background. The spouse helps cook if we are grilling and helps to clear the table.
Now comes the time for writing, or editing, or researching, or reading. My favorite time, but I have to admit some evenings there is no energy left over from the demands of the day job. It’s necessary to pay the bills and my coworkers provide me with great fodder for stories. Lately I’ve had readings and signings once or twice a week for my novel Feisty Family Values. Making calls to set those up occur whenever I can fit them in.
Weekends I get the most sleeping, writing, editing and reading done. House keeping – not so much. Time with family and friends, whenever possible, but not as often as I’d like. Laundry – I do whenever the hamper over flows. Thankfully I don’t have to do yard work, the husband takes care of that. Are you asking yourself what’s so different from a writer’s life and your own? Probably not a lot. You may do photography, or crafts, or run marathons while I’m writing, but otherwise our lives are pretty similar, aren’t they? I’d enjoy reading your comments.

A writer’s life is not glamorous like some people may think. We are ordinary people just like everyone else. We just spend a lot of our time in front of our computers typing away at the keyboard or sitting with a pad of paper, scratching across the surface with a pen or pencil in hand.
I am very fortunate to have such a supportive husband and son. They take care of all the yard work. They also help me out with housework, but there is a lot that only I do. I keep working at getting more organized, but some days I feel that is a losing battle.
I guess I could go on and on, but I won’t. Yes, our lives are quite similar to others, whether they think so or not.
Great blog post! Thanks for sharing.

If only more than 96 people would read about this!
If I had a buck for every time I came to bdtharp.com! Superb writing!
