I’m on vacation from the “day job” this week and I’m just as busy as ever. The nice thing about it though, is that I am able to write during the day and read at night. That is way cool. Not many writers have the resources to be able to write full time and make a living. I think it would be a fabulous job, but no doubt it would become a “job” and some of the fun would be gone. Maybe not, though. I wouldn’t mind trying it some day, like maybe when I retire. With the economy like it is right now, though, I’m hanging on to the “day job” for as long as I can. It pays the bills and I don’t have to worry about the electricity being turned off or whatever. I’m spoiled, but I don’t mind hard work. That may be obvious by the amount of writing I do on my “time off”.
For those of you that don’t find the time to write because of whatever other responsibilities you have, well, all I can say is – keep trying. Carve out a few minutes here and there, and if all you do is write one page a day, then after a year you’ll have 365 pages, which makes a pretty decent sized book. There are a lot of other things I could be doing, watching old movies AGAIN is one of my favorites, but instead I write. Giving up dusting isn’t really a problem until the allergies kick in. Giving up night time television isn’t really a problem, except for NCIS, which is my current favorite show. I love the querky characters.
Once a year I take a writing vacation. I spend a few days doing nothing but writing and it’s great. I might drive over to the bookstore for a latte and a couple of hours uninterrupted white noise. Or I might go into my little office at home and put the “do no disturb” sign on the door. Unfortunately that is more of an invitation than a deterrent. Wherever works best is the place to go if it keeps me writing. It’s kind of like a doctor, you have to keep practicing to get better. So, you might consider a long weekend for a writing vacation next time. And if things get a bit cluttered, so what, it’ll all be there when you’re done writing that article or story.
Enjoy the journey.
